Calamares de importancia comercial en Argentina. Biología, distribución, pesquerías y muestreo biológico OceanDocs
Brunetti, N.E.; Ivanovic, M.L.; Sakai, M..
An overview of the available information on the commercially important squid species distributed in the Argentine Sea and adjacent zones is given. It includes the most representative characteristics to identify the species and general information on their biology, distribution and fisheries. A biological sampling designis presented, with particular emphasis on the identification of sexual maturity stages. The world market of the squid resources has considerably risen in the last decades and one of the most important fishery zones is placed in the Southwest Atlantic region (Area 41, FAO), where squid represent 25. of the total landings. Illex argentinus, sustains the second fishery in volume, with landings reaching 612.000 tonnes in 1999. Other species,...

Redistribution and Transformation in the South African Fishing Industry: The Case of the Squid Fishery OceanDocs
Sauer, W.; Britz, P.; Mather, D..
Political normalisation in South Africa during 1994, and the drafting of the Marine Living Resources Act 1998, led to the imperative to transform the fishing sector to more equitably reflect the racial demographics of the country. The squid fishery, like most other South African fisheries, has historically been dominated by white ownership of access rights and vessels. The squid fishery is an effort limited hand-jig fishery with each operator possessing permits for a certain number of individual fishers. Imposition of racial equity in the squid industry was attempted by means of simple redistribution of a proportion of fisher permits, away from existing boat owners to new entrants from historically disadvantaged communities. The lack of human skills and...

Variabilite de la distribution spatio-temporelle du poulpe (octopus vulgaris) le long des côtes de Mauritanie OceanDocs
Inejih, C.A.O.; Quiniou, L.; Dochi, T..

What happened to the South Coast El Niño 1997-98, squid catches? OceanDocs
Roberts, M.J..
FROM ALL ACCOUNTS, the intense 1997-98 c impacted most regions in the world shown to be historically sensitive to these events following text-book rules. South Africa appears to be the exception. The original forecast gave a 77% chance of catastrophic drought for the past summer in Southern Africa (Farmers Weekly, April 17 1998). The impact, turned out, was mixed. Three-quarters of South Africa experienced drought while the eastern part had 40% more rain that normal! The South Coast lies between the western winter rainfall region of the country and the eastern summer rainfall region. The question is, what influence did El Niño have on this twix zone, and, in particular, the South Coast based squid fishery?
